an unlovable fellow, platon.

the reason most people are uninterested in politics is that it is unresponsive. we have no citizen initiated referendum, no direct election of officers, the policies offered by the parties are mere lollies offered and retrieved at the convenience of the party leader.

under these conditions, rational behavior is to vote for whichever gang of bandits is likely to steal least, or bribe most, and then forget about politics for another period.

as i am to old to profit much from bribery, to poor to be worth stealing from, i use my occasional ballot to vote for democracy:

on an otherwise blank ballot, i write "democracy = cir". if enough people did the same, we'd have democracy in australia.

but the electorate is debased, the candidates venal or naive or both, and oz staggers along with a medieval political system. much older than that actually- rather more in common with the methods in a baboon troupe than democracy.

stay out of the brothel, unless it suits your character.

I beg to differ. I think politicians are extremely responsive, if the people put up a stand.

I think the biggest problems we face in our democracy comes from ignorance, apathy and selfishness. If we can just become a little more informed (do a little research - look for pollies with character not just personality), get a little proactive (sign a petition or two) and support things good for Australia, not just our electorate or our generation, and you will have an Australia that is turned around.
